With Special Guest, Peter Koff, MW/CWM - October 27th

We are excited to announce that Peter Koff, Master of Wine and Cape Wine Master will be at Vintage Station on October 27th. Mr. Koff will be hosting a tasting and discussion of six South African wines of his choosing. Details are not complete at this time but we do know that we will be seating about forty persons for this "West Wing" event. We will announce more as we are able. If you would like to attend please contact Clark Brennan, General Manager cbrennan@vintagestation.com   228-896-4420.

Peter Koff Bio:    A native of South Africa, born in Johannesburg, Peter developed a taste for fine wine early on and always had an interest in fine wine, something South Africans took for granted. As his interest in wine grew, so did his search for wine knowledge which led him to the Cape Wine Master examination in South Africa (at that time, he was one of only five). During this time, as wine was just a consuming hobby of his, Peter qualified as a Civil Engineer, completed his MBA and moved into the computer field as an engineer and then as a mainframe marketing representative with IBM. Peter moved to the U. S. in 1987 and shortly after the UK Master of Wine program opened up to the world, which gave him the opportunity to pursue his dream. He left the computer world in 1991 and started his own company, Fairest Cape Beverage Company, and qualified as a Master of Wine in 1993; he is one of only two people in the world to hold both of these impressive titles.

Did you know?…

At Vintage Station your wine glass appears to be about half full when we pour it. There is a reason for this. Wine needs to combine with the air to fully develop in taste and smell. Swirling the wine in the glass allows the air and wine to mix. Also, the wine on the side of the glass helps in allowing the aroma to collect in the glass. Swirling would not be possible if the glass were poured to the top.

Also, we pour in large glasses. For example, our red wine glass is an eighteen and a quarter ounce glass. If we poured it full, it would hold three quarters of a bottle. That would, of course, raise the price of a glass considerably. We are very careful to pour five ounces in each glass and price our product according to the amount poured.

The bill for a celebration party for the 55 drafters of the US Constitution was for 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, 8 bottles of whiskey, 22 bottles of port, 8 bottles of hard cider, 12 beers and seven bowls of alcohol punch large enough that "ducks could swim in them."

The longest recorded champagne cork flight was 177 feet and 9 inches, four feet from level ground at Woodbury Vineyards in New York State.

Foot treading of grapes is still used in producing a small quantity of the best port wines.

In ancient Babylon, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (fermented honey beverage) he could drink for a month after the wedding. Because their calendar was lunar or moon-based, this period of free mead was called the "honey month," or what we now call the "honeymoon."

Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the liquid to determine the ideal temperature, neither too hot nor too cold, for adding yeast. From this we get the phrase "rule of thumb."

In English pubs drinks are served in pints and quarts. In old England, bartenders would advise unruly customers to mind their own pints and quarts. It's the origin of "mind your P's and Q's."
